postheadericon Is Buddhism Just a Form of Spiritual Self-Centeredness? Not!

A few years ago, the journalist and author John Horgan wrote an article on his personal exploration of Buddhism, and the negative opinion of Buddhist practice and philosophy that he “reluctantly” came. Mr. Horgan, who as a writer specializing in coverage of the world of science, well versed on the subject of spiritual awakening, with an excellent book about what the advanced science say about the search for transcendent experiences written. After reading some of his books, and a high opinion of him both as a writer and man, as I was recently in his article on Buddhism, I was naturally curious about what to learn opinions he had formed.

Even if I do not really have the label “Buddhist”, my thoughts and spiritual practice have much in common with some Buddhist schools of thought. And I always had the utmost respect for committed Buddhists. Then I felt a little disappointed and defensive when I read some of the critical thought of Mr. Horgan. Not that his thoughts to himself, took me by surprise. Some of his pet angry against Buddhism are actually fairly standard critique. Critical chauvinistic and racist Western opponents of the Eastern religions began way back to the expression in the late 19th Century. But Mr. Horgan is not a racist, an imperialist cultural type or parochial fundamentalists. The fact that he still hear how a critical perspective on Buddhism means that it must be taken seriously and thoughtfully addressed by the two “card carrying” Buddhists and followers like me.

To do this, I am going to each of the points he made against the religious beliefs and practices, in order of appearance in his article. The first point he makes is that Buddhism is “functionally theistic.” This is the doctrine of karma and reincarnation means “the existence of a cosmic judge who, like Santa, under our wickedness and goodness” in order to determine our next incarnation.

Although I personally do not believe in the doctrine of reincarnation to subscribe, I find this criticism at first be quite low. Playing belief in a kind of divinity in man-stage theory of karma and reincarnation is obviously a result of our tendency to anthropomorphism, interpret the impersonal and personal, in terms of people who think as a human-like agents behind the strengths and natural processes. Of course, the trend in terms of my big-guy-in-air micro-God of the universe from the outside is also a legacy of the 2000 years of Western religious training. Mr. Horgan seems to be subjected to these two trends. But the Buddha, Buddhists and many confessions are certainly not. Read the rest of this entry »
